Broadway Civil War Monument

Historical Significance

The third Civil War monument erected in New Haven, CT, the Broadway Civil War Monument was dedicated in 1905 and honors the First Connecticut Light Battery, and the 6th,. 7th, and 10th Connecticut Volunteers.  The monument was designed and built by Smith Granite Company, Westerly, RI.

Conservation Treatment

  • ŸReplacement of missing ramrod.  The replacement ramrod was carved from matching Westerly granite and was based on historic photographs.
  • ŸStone cleaning, with particular focus on the removal of persistent environmental staining that had tinged the white Westerly granite a pale green.
  • ŸRemoval of failed mortar from the joints on the base.
  • ŸRepointing the joints on the base.
  • ŸCleaning and coating of bronze plaques.
  • ŸCleaning and patination of crowning copper eagle.
