Historical Significance
The third Civil War monument erected in New Haven, CT, the Broadway Civil War Monument was dedicated in 1905 and honors the First Connecticut Light Battery, and the 6th,. 7th, and 10th Connecticut Volunteers. The monument was designed and built by Smith Granite Company, Westerly, RI.
Conservation Treatment
- Replacement of missing ramrod. The replacement ramrod was carved from matching Westerly granite and was based on historic photographs.
- Stone cleaning, with particular focus on the removal of persistent environmental staining that had tinged the white Westerly granite a pale green.
- Removal of failed mortar from the joints on the base.
- Repointing the joints on the base.
- Cleaning and coating of bronze plaques.
- Cleaning and patination of crowning copper eagle.
- Application of protective wax coating on copper eagle.
